Scratching is a natural cat behaviour, They do this to keep their claws sharp, stretch their muscles and even mark their territory. If a designated post is not offered they start to focus this behaviour on household items like carpets and couches.

Cats also love to jump and climb, they will naturally aim for a high vantage point to survey their surroundings. Scratching posts allow cats to have a high perch to keep an eye out as well as a safe elevated sleeping area. The height has the added benefit of helping to relieve stress and anxiety in cats.

It is best to start young with scratching posts to teach a kitten acceptable scratching areas, If a scratching post is introduced post undesired behaviour it is recommended to use attractants such as toys and catnip to entice the cat to use the post.
